The Australian Museums and Galleries Association Western Australia, as part of the WA Collections Sector Working Group, is proud to be involved in the development of Collections WA – a free, web based collections tool that will enable Western Australia’s extensive cultural and creative collections be discoverable and accessible to a world-wide audience.
What is Collections WA?
It is an online, searchable platform that will bring together the many different collections held across Western Australia. Similar to a basic Collections Management System, organisations will upload photographs and information about items within their collection that will then be searchable online. It will be a valuable tool for anyone conducting research or with a keen interest in our State’s history.
Why is Collections WA important?
Collections held in Western Australia capture the countless stories of our past, however these collections are currently distributed far and wide across the State, housed in galleries, museums, cultural centres, RSLs, libraries and archives in every community. Through Collections WA we will create a central database of information and images about the many collections held across the State, allowing us to make more connections, build stronger stories and gain a better understanding about the intricacies of the State’s histories.
AMaGA Western Australia is working alongside the Western Australian Museum and the Collections Sector Working Group to develop the platform and to deliver training and support for organisations to learn how to use Collections WA. We want as many collections digitised and shared online as possible – and this is where you come in!
We are compiling a comprehensive contact list of all collection organisations across the state – that’s museums, libraries, RSLs, galleries, cultural centres, archives, schools, local governments, language centres, and anyone else who holds a collection. This list will be used to get in touch with you during each stage of the roll out process. If you are interested in being involved in Collections WA, please register your details with us.

The regional training and development of Collections WA is being made possible thanks to the generous support of Lotterywest and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.
