About Us

Western Australia’s peak advocacy body for the cultural and creative collecting sector.
About Us

Australian Museums and Galleries Association (AMaGA) is a not-for-profit, non-government national association and peak advocacy body representing museums and galleries throughout Australia.

AMaGA Western Australia is the Perth-based branch that looks after museums, galleries and cultural workers in Western Australia. We provide professional services and training to staff, volunteers and those passionate for cultural and creative collections to develop and sustain the over 400 museums and galleries throughout WA. We advocate on behalf of the sector to communicate the value of museums and galleries, raise professional standards, inform policy and promote ethical practice.

The WA branch is governed by a Committee, elected by members of AMaGA Western Australia, that determines the operational and financial direction of the branch. This is defined by the AMaGA Western Australia By-Laws and operates under the AMaGA Constitution and Model Rules.

AMaGA National

AMaGA was established in January 1994 through the merger of a number of separate museum associations. The aim was to focus our efforts on one set of shared objectives and create a stronger national body.  The organisation is governed by the National Council – a group of elected representatives who determine the direction of the National Organisation.

AMaGA has branches in every State and Territory and delivers training, advocacy, professional support and leadership across the country. We are proud of the diversity of our membership with national, state, regional and community museums, galleries, historic sites, botanic and zoological gardens, research centres, Indigenous cultural centres, and Keeping Places across Australia. We bring together the shared knowledge, skills and dedication to culture and the arts held by our members to demonstrate the important social and economic value of museums and galleries to Australia.

You can find out more about our National Office and the other State branches by visiting the AMaGA National website.

AMaGA Western Australia Regional Chapters

Regional Chapters in Western Australia play an important role in connecting our staff with regional and remote museums and galleries across the State. Regional members of AMaGA are encouraged to join their local chapter to ensure they remain connected with their neighbouring organisations and to the WA branch office. Chapter meeting locations, timings and content are determined by those in the Chapter to make sure they meet your needs and priorities. The branch office provides support through networking and training opportunities, regular reports and we try to attend meetings when possible.
We currently have chapters located in:

  • Peel
  • Wheatlands
  • Southwest
  • Great Southern
  • Mid West.

We are looking for interested parties to establish Chapters in other regions of Western Australia. If you are interested in starting or joining a Chapter, please contact us.

Our Partners

AMaGA Western Australia is grateful to its partners for their ongoing support. It is through their generosity that we are able to deliver our services to the Western Australia collecting sector.
